We argue that Chinese traditional culture promotes a firm’s outward foreign direct investment by fostering its corporate social responsibility which helps it address legitimacy challenges in the host countries. The idea was tested using three years of data covering 2,514 Chinese listed firms (7,106 observations). A positive relationship was demonstrated between the strength of Chinese traditional culture in a region of China (subnational) and outward foreign direct investment by firms located in the region. And the effects of Chinese traditional culture are magnified for firms with a government affiliation such as state ownership and mediated by corporate social responsibility. A supplementary study based on a survey sample of private firms in China establishes the micro foundations by showing a positive relationship between Chinese traditional culture in a region and a CEO’s Chinese traditional culture, and a mediation effect of corporate social responsibility between a CEO’s Chinese traditional culture and outward foreign direct investment.
